Cleaning Up the Crumbs

It has been a whole month today since our Skylar-girl has been gone.  I never knew how much my heart would ache each day without our canine companion here with us.  Skylar slept burrowed under my old college comforter in our bedroom (in her special corner with framed puppy picture hanging on the wall above her bed).  She would pop up each morning when my alarm clock buzzed, so my day starts off thinking of her and anticipating her pitter patter across our hard wood floor.

Whitney asks, almost daily, about Skylar.  I noticed a rainbow a couple of weeks ago that I pointed out to Whitney and told her that Skylar was sending a happy message to us.  So, now, Whitney randomly waves to heaven and says, "Hey, Sis!  What are you doing up there?  Are you playing and eating dog biscuits?!"  It is so sweet.  While I feel myself on the verge of tears everytime she "talks" to Skylar, I chat right along with her. :)

So there's a hole in my heart ... and crumbs on my floor.  Crumbs you might ask?  Yes, crumbs.  We haven't had food crumbs on our floors in years.  Dirt, leaves, debris ... yes.  Food ... rarely.  I never realized how many sweeps of the broom Skylar saved me all those years.  And I never fully comprehended what a messy little pig Whitney is!  Skylar was always the "first responder" to any spilled food and that's how she got the nickname "Skylar-and-a-half" when my parents came to visit after Whitney started eating table food! :)  Notice who was front and center when Whitney got to try her first bite of rice cereal!!

While there's not a day that goes by that I don't think of our precious pooch, we continue to be comforted by our memories, even when it comes in the form of crumbs!

In other news, January has quickly come and is almost gone!  It has been downright COLD this past week.  We have enjoyed some snow on a couple of occasions (and our wood-burning fireplace at night!).  Whitney loves to be pulled around in the sled!  Notice the Brrrrr-worthy pictures below:

 Grinning in snowy delight!

Building a snowman with Grandma while Ben and I enjoyed the last home Colts game!

Enjoying the holiday lights spectacle (and a few animals) at the Cincinnati Zoo on 1/1!

Happy 2013!!
