As my initial post eluded, it is definitely September and, thus, football season in the Whitaker household! Whether high school, college, professional, or fantasy...football is in the air and here to stay for the next 6 months! Despite an SEC opener loss by the Bulldogs and a season opener loss by the Colts, Ben is still breathing, functioning, and keeping his chin up. :) Being the true sports fan that I am, after battling a yucky cold all weekend, decided to crash during the Colts game on Sunday. I knew something wasn't right when I woke up during the 4th quarter to find the game still on...and Ben taking Whitney on a stroller ride through the neighborhood! Then, I saw the score, and realized that Daddy needed some fresh air. :)
So, Monday night we have to re-live every bad play, every wrong call, every bum groin injury (you get the picture), as Colts fans call in to the Bill Polian (President of the Colts organization) show. Ugh. Ben hangs on to every word with great intensity, nodding his head in agreement, shaking his head in disgust, or giving me "knuckles" during proud team moments. I proceed to tell Ben how annoying and redundant some of the callers are and he frankly replies, "Honey, do you know what the definition of a fan is?" Uh oh. I start to feel one of those "teachable moments in sports" coming on. Ben says, "A fanatic." Ok. I stand corrected.
Every year on our anniversary, I say to Ben that we need to tell each other why we still love each other. And, well, it's a joke now that Ben replies, "because you let me watch sports." He said this one year early on in our marriage, while I was waiting for a far more soap opera worthy response and we, now, laugh about it every year! But, that is one of the reasons I love Ben. He has a simple, but true heart. He loves God, his family...and sports. And, he still loves me, even though I am just a fan...without the "atic."
